Mission Statement
In Alaminos Goat Farm we enjoy and love what we are doing. Our customers always comes first at AGF. The work that we have done has opened the door for goat raisers and the government to see the huge potential of milking goats in tropical Philippines.
For the Filipino Farmers whose life we want to touch we dedicate the inroads we have made in our Alaminos Salad Garden Feeding Program. It is our stand that nutrition is the key factor to be successful in goat raising. We believe that the Alaminos Salad Garden with Indigofera as the main tree legume can help the farmers in the countryside make their goats to be more productive based on our experience in Alaminos.
|
We are focussed in creating awareness that goat dairying in tropical Philippines is a sustainable and profitable business. Come visit us and we will share with you the secret of our success in dairying goats under the hot, humid and wet weather of the Philippines.

1st Generation Pregnant Mitra Dairy Line (MDL) with AGF Edgar as her Sire

|
|
ASG Feeding Program and the Mitra Dairy Line (MDL) Breeding Program
January 22, 2012
The past several months since mid-October of 2011, AGF website write ups were more on the ASG feeding program, less and less on the MDL breeding program. Friends were starting to asked, "how is the MDL breeding program doing? ” They told us since we are a breeder farm we should focus on writing more about our breeder goats.
From the time the 1st generation Mitra Dairy line (MDL) doeling is selected and mated for the first time to the time to produce a ready to breed 12 month 2nd generation MDL doeling, it will take 17 months. It will take 15 months to make an assessment on milk performance of the first generation MDL doe, test for length of lactation period and milk volumes for the 305 days milk. The timeline begins at the start of the Mitra Dairy Line planning activities.
For the 2nd generation MDL doeling, from time it is born to the end of milk testing it will take us 27 months. That is how long it will take to make a decision in the selection of the third generation MDL doeling, if it will be based on milk records of her dam.
|
| |
|
|
|
|
In the Mitra Dairy Line planning activities we have prepared we are now on the 5th month, we still have a long way to go. The long wait in between activities is an opportunity for us to finalise work in the Alaminos Salad Garden feeding program by year end.
ASG Feeding Program
Last year AGF fed a total of 180,000 kilos of mixed concentrate goat’s feeds, feed cost was a staggering Php 2,160,000 pesos. This year we expect to lower feed cost by 30% to Php 1,512,000 pesos with the addition of the 30% fresh shredded indigofera to the concentrate goat feed ration.
Last year we invested a total of Php 170,000 pesos for the additional equipment needed for the Alaminos Salad Garden feeding prorgam to provide the shredded indigofera for the program.
The additional labor cost for the two workers who would plant, harvest and shred the indigofera would be covered by sales generated from the forage planting materials from the already well established Alaminos Salad Garden.
The key here for 2012 is to establish numbers to show goat performance in terms of milk yields, kidding and growth rate with the introduction of indigofera in the concentrate feeds for goats. If we can show an improvement in goat performance, full blast commercialization work for the Alaminos Salad Garden feeding program in tropical Philippines will be undertaken.
The continuous increase in cost of concentrate feeds makes the success of ASG feeding program imperative for the profitable and sustainable operation of Alaminos Goat Farm.

Added 70 Watts Metal Hallide Lamp To Simulate Artificial Long Day During Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice 2011, AGF Adds More Lighting in Dairy Goats Pen
January 16, 2012
The annual winter solstice occurred last December 22, it was the longest night and shortest day for 2011, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
In temperate countries these signals declining milk yield. In a study done in Northern Mexico, adding additional lighting to create an artificial long day, 16 hour daytime have positive effect in milk yields for alpine goats.
PAGASA said nights get longer in the Philippines due to winter solstice, an astronomical term regarding the position of the sun "lying at its farthest point" south of the equator.
From our out of the box ways, we decided to add a 70 watts Metal Hallide Lamp and opened it just before the sun sets late in the afternoon and put it off after milking at 9:00 PM. The light is put on again at 5:00 AM until the sun rises in the morning. The additional lighting would offset the longer darker nights. We would try to observe if there is a basis in the statement that the longer night’s affects temperate dairy goats milk yields.
During this period, the sun is slightly directed towards the Southern Hemisphere, thus sunlight does not directly hit the country. For some, this signals the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and summer in the Southern Hemisphere.
While the Philippines is located in the Northern Hemisphere and does not have winter, it experiences colder than usual weather during this period. The winter solstice also marks the Philippine nights that are longer than daytime.
Studies suggest that in temperate countries, declining day length called photo period causes a surge in reproductive hormones and sexual activities on both bucks and does. Sexual urge remains high for at least several months and fertility is at its highest level at this time. Does the same hold true for dairy goats under tropical conditions?
There are still a lot to learn in dairying goats under the tropical condition of the Philippines. Join us as we try to unravel the peculiarities in dairying a temperate breed ( Saanen) in the tropics.

Art with New Indigofera Planted Through Direct Seeding
Milk Yields with the ASG Feeding Program
January 11, 2011
Sharing of information is the cornerstone of AGF success in establishing its credibility in the work it is doing with the ASG feeding program. We realized that for the ASG feeding program to be successful, other farms who will follow the program can replicate the same results we have experienced in Alaminos. We decided that until such a time we have acquired conclusive data in terms of milk yields we will refrain from making statements about the positive effect on the inclusion of fresh shredded indigofera to the dairy and meat goats concentrate diets.
In the mean time we will focus in documenting what we are doing as we move ahead in the ASG feeding program. Focus will be on increasing the volume of indigofera in the Alaminos Salad Garden to assure supply of fresh indigofera year round to meet the demand for the ASG feeding program. We will start milk recording in March as the new milking season begins.
The window of opportunity presented itself in mid-October 2011, as the milking season was about to end to start the milking goats with the new concentrate ration that included 30% fresh shredded indigofera and palm kernel cake. It is a given that any change in feeding regimen would result to a drop in milk yields of dairy goats in lactation.
We found it prudent to start the Alaminos Salad Garden (ASG) feeding program with the inclusion of indigofera in the concentrate diet towards the end of the milking season. This would give the dairy goats more time to adapt to the new diet, the kidding season started this January and goes through up to March.
The period between October and December 2011 were challenging times for the ASG feeding program. True to form the change in feeds resulted in swings in feed consumption and milk yields. The inclusion of palm kernel cake to the diet further added to the burden for the goats to adapt to the new concentrate diet.
Using our decade long experience in feeding feedlot cattle, we resorted to increasing molasses content of the concentrate diet to improve palatability. To give the diet a contrasting sweet and salty taste which ruminants loves, we added salt to the diet.
To produce more healthy and fast growing replacement breeders, it was decided to leave the kids with the dam for 45 to 60 days before weaning the kids. Partial milking is done once a day starting on the 30th day.The kids are separated from their dam in the evening for morning milking then returned again to their dam after milking.
The work we are doing with the ASG feeding program are work in progress, it is for the goat raisers to decide what they think would be good for their operation. One thing is for sure though, the addition of indigofera to the feed concentrate diet resulted to lower feed cost for AGF goat operation.

AGF Obama 1902 (Single)
Dairy Goat Buck
Born: 01/03/2009
Sire: AGF LOUCA Darwyn
Dam: AGF 1458 Amera Asmara (Quad)
AGF OBAMA
AGF OBAMA 1902 would easily qualify as one of the best purebred Anglo Nubian buck we have produced in years. His sire is AGF Darwyn and dam is AGF 1458 Amera Asmara, both imported purebred Anglo Nubian from Australia. His good bloodline from Australia will be to his advantage as we use him as our junior herdsire.
He was born a single kid last January 3, 2009 with a kidding weight of 4.4 kilos. Last April 24, 2010 his weight was 45 kilos. His early growth rate was delayed because of lingering colds during the cold months. He has since recovered and is fast gaining weight. He is starting to show his real potential and starting to look good as we expected him to be.
We have decided to retain AGF OBAMA 1902 after Ayi Alsua have changed his mind in not taking his option for AGF Obama 1902. We are using Obama for our AGF Darwyn line breeding program. AGF OBAMA is being used to breed his half sisters from the Mitra Line side. The top females produced from this program would be bred back to their Sire, AGF Darwyn.
AGF Obama will make its mark in our Mitra Line breed improvement program and makes us very proud to say, " we are the breeder of AGF OBAMA". |
