BETTER BREED, BETTER BREAD, US PL 480 AGIPBeS
Program
Dr. Baltazar P. Mateo, Program Director US PL 480 DA-BAI AGRIPBeS Program
The Bureau of Animal Industry, through its project Accelerating
the Genetic Resource Improvement Program for Beef Cattle and Small Ruminants
(AGRIPBES), funded by the
USPL-480 is currently addressing
the development of small
ruminants through setting up a
network of genetic farms in both
private and government sectors.
New bloodline and quality breeder stocks were loaned
to farmer cooperators and ranchers to upgrade their stock.
To ensure the sustainability of the Program, the
identified nucleus farms will maintain and produce top quality breeds and
distribute offspring to multiplier farms for propagation and distribution to
farmers. So far, AGRIPBES has already distributed 1196 heads of sheep and goats benefitting
185 beneficiaries. The breeds
like Boer, Anglo Nubian, Saanen, Alpine, Toggenburg, La Mancha and Oberhaslii for goats,
and breeds like Dorper, Katahdin,
and St. Croix for sheep are now being
maintained by the identified recipients . Still to be
distributed on October 8, 2012 after the
30 day quarantine period are 430 heads.
There are already 56 identified recipients for these animals.
The project has also improved the breeding
facilities of the two (2) semen processing centers involved in the Project : The National Artificial Breeding Center
(NABC) in Malaybalay, Bukidnon and the Nueva
Ecija Stock Farm (NESF) in General Tinio, Nueva Ecija. Their improvement strengthens the National Artificial
Insemination (AI) Program through the production of good quality semen.
For the year 2011, there were 133,810 doses of
semen produced by both centers and distribution was 126,618 doses. In addition,
it has imported 10,000 doses of superior frozen bull semen for distribution to
government, private and small hold farms. There were 23,352 recorded AI
offspring for the year and 10 Brahman bulls were produced by the NESF through
the use of the imported Brahman bull semen.
As far as AI paraphernalia is concerned, the Project has distributed 300
AI kits for both cattle and small ruminants and 178 liquid nitrogen tanks
(mother tank & field tanks) since the start of the Project in 2008

Anglo Nubians Bucks as AGF Payment to DA-BAI AGRIPBeS Program at the 2012 AgriLink Show
|
| |
With the prevailing repayment scheme of
AGRIPBES in 3-year period , the rate of which is 4 males
for every male loaned and 3 females for
every female loaned , the Project hopes to collect upgraded
goats and sheep as well as purebred offsprings for distribution to multiplier farms and small hold farmers which will eventually
improve their economic conditions
through creation of job opportunities and insurance
of bigger profits.

A Letter From a Friend About AGF Edgar's Pedigree
January 20, 2011
Our friend Mos Velasco send us his analysis of AGF Edgar pedigree based on a book, Celebrating 50 Years of Anglo Nubian Breeding in Australia. It somewhat confirms our initial observation that AGF Edgar’s progenies are showing more dairyness compared with AGF Darwyn which is more on the meat side.
We are reprinting a letter from Mos Velasco about AGF Edgar, our herdsire for the new family we are developing for our AA dairy line.
Hi Art,
Happy New Year.
I have been following up on your Alaminos Anglo Dairy Line and AGF Edgar's impact on AADL dairyness. Your records show that AGF Edgar's progenies are more dairy than AGF Darwyn's. I filled in the blanks on his pedigree as the Aust. pedigree certificate does not show this. Perhaps this may explain his dairyness. I also filled in the blank for Darwyn for comparison. Incidentally Obama has no Q* does in his dam side.
My source is a book, Celebrating 50 years of Anglonubian breeding in Australia.
I wish for the success of your advocacy since your success is likewise the success of everyone in the business.
Thank you once more.

We would like to thank our friend Mos Velasco, for taking time in analysing the pedigree of AGF Edgar. It somewhat gives us the confidence knowing you have friends who are there to help. The positive analysis about the dairyness of AGF Edgar, base on pedigree will keeps us moving forward in developing a new family of the Alaminos Anglo Dairy Line .

AMS Cross
January 26, 2010
After 9 months we have decided to resume production of the Alaminos Mitra Saanen line of dairy goats. AGF 1605 Louca Darwyn is the head herdsire of the AMS line of dairy goats. We are breeding heavily AGF Darwyn with our F3 and F2 Saanen does and doelings.
The few AMS line produced last year are very fast grower and are showing signs of hetorosis. We need to prove its abilty in milking and how long it will lactate.

AGF 1605 Louca Darwyn Purebred AngloNubianBuck (Deceased 2012)
April 7, 2009
The arrival of AGF 1605 Louca Darwyn a purebred AngloNubian buck from one of the leading breeder in Australia in 2007, marks the start of our Alaminos Anglo breed improvement program. AGF Darwyn has a prominent roman nose face and with his young age has the size and body to become an outstanding herdsire. He has a slight overshot jaw which he throws to some of his progeny and this is a very small flaw which we consider as tolerable.
His bloodline are impressive coming from one of the best Dam of Sandy Green of Killara Ram Stud, the dam's mother is Killara Ram Pamia an Australian Champion with good milking line. The dam Killara Ram Lavanya recorded an average of 4 litres of milk per day when it was tested.
AGF 1605 Louca Darwyn is prepotent and kids coming from him are showing a lot of length, height and his prominent features. We are happy with the performance of AGF Darwyn and his solid contribution to our breed improvement program. He is the cornerstone in improving our Mitra line which we are using in developing a Philippines dairy goat. We are crossing our Alaminos Anglo does with a purebred Saanen buck and branded it as Alaminos Anglo Saanen (AAS) cross.
This year AGF decided to slow down the production of the AAS Cross because of the big demand for Alaminos Anglo line doelings and bucklings which we could not meet. Raisers are clamoring for more Alaminos Anglo l doelings and bucklings, to meet market demand we are focusing on increasing their numbers. This is purely a business decision and we will continue the AAS cross program once we have met market demand for our Alaminos Anglo Line.
To improve the Alaminos Anglos, a stricker selection criteria were introduced. The buck producing smaller progenies were taken out of the breeding program. The doe lines producing our famous Alaminos Anglo line were identified. Selection of the Top 10 percent of the doelings produced is being implemented to sustain improvement of the Alaminos Anglo Line in the coming years.
AGF Darwyn is heavilly used in the Alaminos Anglo breed improvement program and his progenies selected for breeding are bred to AGF Edgar. The progenies of AGF Edgar are then bred back to AGF Darwyn.
We are happy for having selected AGF Louca Darwyn from Australia as our head herdsire for our Alaminos Anglo Breed Improvement Program. He is producing a lot of outstanding progenies and makes us very proud as a breeder.
The Alaminos Anglo have been a productive line for us, it is very prolific which means it is adapted to the tropical condition in the country. The Anglo Nubian does we have imported from Australia in 2007 were a failure. It has not adapted to the tropical condition in the country to this day. That is why we have started to focus our attention in increasing the production of the local Alaminos Anglos instead of waiting for the imported Anglo Nubian does to be productive which we think will not happen anymore.

AGF Obama 1902 (Single)
Dairy Goat Buck
Born: 01/03/2009
Sire: AGF LOUCA Darwyn
Dam: AGF 1458 Amera Asmara (Quad)
AGF OBAMA
AGF OBAMA 1902 would easily qualify as one of the best purebred Anglo Nubian buck we have produced in years. His sire is AGF Darwyn and dam is AGF 1458 Amera Asmara, both imported purebred Anglo Nubian from Australia. His good bloodline from Australia will be to his advantage as we use him as our junior herdsire.
He was born a single kid last January 3, 2009 with a kidding weight of 4.4 kilos. Last April 24, 2010 his weight was 45 kilos. His early growth rate was delayed because of lingering colds during the cold months. He has since recovered and is fast gaining weight. He is starting to show his real potential and starting to look good as we expected him to be.
We have decided to retain AGF OBAMA 1902 after Ayi Alsua have changed his mind in not taking his option for AGF Obama 1902. We are using Obama for our AGF Darwyn line breeding program. AGF OBAMA is being used to breed his half sisters from the Alaminos Anglo (AA) Line side. The top females produced from this program would be bred back to their Sire, AGF Darwyn.
AGF Obama will make its mark in our Alaminos Anglo (AA) Line breed improvement program and makes us very proud to say, " we are the breeder of AGF OBAMA".
